Bankrupt West African Cashew Plant Triples Productivity (Scaling Up Case)
2,500-employee cashew company Anatrans, based in Burkina Faso, was on the verge of bankruptcy. Backed by two investors in the Netherlands, consultant Harm Voortman and his wife Maliyabo de Kwaasteniet used Scaling Up to triple production. This ScaleUps.com article details how the daily standup, Topgrading, FACe tool, the Power of One, and a focus on the process using Lean, significantly turned around profits and cash. Please invest two minutes to pick up some ideas for your own firm – then triple productivity. There really is this much runway in most firms – perfect for a year focused on driving efficiency.
How Project Work Is Different Than Production Work
For one, projects are not as repetitive. Second, because every project is different, there is a lot more risk. Both factors lead to massive amounts of wasted time and expense. Eli Goldratt’s daughter has followed up her dad’s breakthrough book The Goal (the most important biz book ever written – everything in biz is about identifying and addressing constraints) with a new book titled Rules of Flow. It’s a critically important book for everyone who manages projects – please, please, please have your project leads read this insightful parable that addresses how to increase flow within projects and what are the main obstacles – saving significant amounts of time and money. Nicola Jokic’ was key to my Denver Nuggets winning the NBA Championship last weekend. Not by accident he’s also the team captain, fondly referred to as Captain Jokić! Mark Stone plays the same role for the Stanley Cup winners Vegas Golden Knights. Sam Walker’s book The Captain Class: The Hidden Force That Creates the World’s Greatest Teams details that the key to a sustainable winning record is not just talent, coaching, and tactics – but having the right team captains. Research shows that when the team captain is lost, the same talent, coaching, and tactics fail. They are the lynchpins to success (sergeants win wars, not lieutenants). Who are your team captains?
Characteristics of Great Team Captains
Who is the person(s) on your team who exhibit the characteristics of successful team captains? This podcast interview with Sam Walker details several from his book (worth the listen this weekend):
- Power of Relentlessness (doggedness) – effort is contagious.
- Tests the limits of rules – aggressive in finding the line and playing right up to it and intelligent enough to know the line.
- Strong conflict between coach and team captain -- debating tactics and approach
- Great captains lead and command from the back (self-effacing) and everything they do is for the common good of the team – no ego about their performance and liberating the best performers on the team.
- No rah-rah speeches – instead, very subtle. Tim Dunkin, San Antonio Spurs (blob in interviews) did lots of talking on the floor, circulating and communicating constantly.
- Don’t pursue captain role for the prestige – but be willing to run into the burning building. It’s a burden to be captain and they know how hard it is. They aren’t the person with the title, but the team knows they are the informal leader.
Please take the time to listen to this important podcast and/or read the book. You and your team need the right team captains! This partnership is critical to sustained success.
Keeping Profitability “Top of Mind”
Legacy Companies co-founders Doug Fath and Jeff Greco want to keep a mindset of profitability literally “top of mind” this year. Customer Voice Parties
The key to customer-friendly software (or anything) is a routine of analyzing customer input. This Scaleups.com article details how our technology partner Align (mobile-ready dashboards for tracking priorities, KPIs, OKRs, etc.) hosts monthly “Customer Voice Parties” via Zoom. Initiated in the pandemic, all employees participate, creating an organization-wide conversation around what the “customer success teams” and salespeople are learning needs changed in the software to make it even easier to use. One recent change suggested by customers is providing sharable links they can paste in emails to point other users to information in the system they want to discuss. Walmart ($611B), Amazon, Exxon Mobile, and Apple head the list – all the stuff we need! Apple was by far the most profitable ($99.8B on $394B in revenues). Total revenues are equivalent to 71.9% ($18 trillion) of US GDP, though lots of those revenues are international. I didn’t have time to calculate rev/emp or profit/emp this time (and Fortune isn’t making it easy) but overall revenues were up 13% and profits down 15%.

He chalks up the magical success he’s experienced to truly letting love flow – much like we’re learning is key to scaling a business – it’s more about flow, letting go of ego, and staying present. Marc Andreessen – AI Will Save the World
Co-founder of the most important and different VC firm in the world, Marc Andreessen’s writing and thinking are usually spot on. His latest blog post makes a case for why AI will not destroy the world but will likely save it (I agree!). He Did it Again – Hamel Interviews Senge
I love when two humble and brilliant giants of the biz world spend time chatting. This time it’s strategist Gary Hamel interviewing MIT’s famous Peter Senge, the father of the modern learning organization. Main counter-intuitive takeaways, besides the quote above:
- Make change FIRST at the frontline of the organization, not the top – that’s where the real work gets done anyway.
- One person can’t make change – you need three or more partners/critical mass – and look sideways for this help – look to your peers, not your boss!
- It’s a partnership between frontline leadership and executive leadership.
Go to the 10-minute mark in the interview and watch the next two minutes if limited on time. Then listen to the rest where they discuss the 3 limiting beliefs that stifle leaders (hint: when we think we have all the answers – and we’re unable to embrace paradox).

Coach Marshall Martin Dies
It’s with extreme sadness I share that Scaling Up Coach Marshall Martin died May 29 after suffering severe injuries from a biking accident May 21 while competing in the Chattanooga Ironman. You can read the details here. Marshall knew how to coach and play – packing in a lifetime of activities in a shorter-than-expected time. Some might say he should have played it safe – but it looks like a freak accident that could happen to any of us while driving, walking, etc. Are you playing enough? Enjoying life while you can? These are my takeaways from this tragedy. I’ll plan more play time in honor of our dear friend and all those we’ve lost too soon.
Frenemies More Toxic Than Enemies
This latest Adam Grant article details research indicating that frenemies – people who make us feel good and bad – wreck more havoc on your well-being than enemies. Notes Grant:
Fixing an ambivalent relationship requires the trust and respect to tell each other the truth…(and) if it becomes impossible to turn them into true friends, it might be time to let them go.

Grant goes on to note:
We all get hurt by the people we love, and unpleasant interactions don’t mean we should walk away. Research suggests that on average, people tend to be happier staying in imperfect marriages and imperfect jobs than abandoning them altogether.

Law Firm Doubles Revenue/Employee (Scaling Up Case Study)
Danny Daniel’s dad was killed by a drunk driver when he was three.
