The late Dr. Edwards Deming exclaimed that the #1 job of a leader is prediction – the ability to see around corners. And you don’t have to be months ahead, just minutes. The key is intel. All wars and markets are won through firsthand intelligence. To explore what it takes to be a good predictor, Adam Grant hosted a “Forecasting Tournament.” From February through September, over 2,000 people registered their predictions on 25 different events, including:
- Who would win the Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer/football?
- How many confirmed COVID cases would Brazil have by July?
- Would Jeff Bezos or Richard Branson get to space first?
Who Won? Six Key Principles
Who won? And how? The winner, according to Grant “…isn’t a specialist in economics, politics, or international affairs. He grew up in California, studied biology in college in Chicago, and now works as a business analyst at a medical group. His name is Greg Justice, and he’s only 24 years old.” The key? Being less wrong!! Adam’s blog details 6 key principles Greg and the runners-up used, including “Lead with curiosity, not conviction.” Please take 1 minute to scan the 6 principles. Predictor of Good Predictors? 2 Questions
Adam also asked the contestants 10 questions. The answers to two of the questions were the best predictor of who would be the best predictor (yes, I had fun writing that!).
