COE Distributing’s Latest AI Initiative
Pittsburgh-based office furniture distributor COE Distributing has launched several AI initiatives – one to determine the location of their next distribution center (Houston!); another to help predict which new product launches are likely to be successful (it's working); and their latest is “Olivia” – a web widget created by startup Forethought.

You can interact with her (Olivia) directly at www.coedistributing.com (lower right corner).  We made the focus of what she can and should accomplish to be repetitive tasks that our CS Team gets bombarded with.  So far she can advise when an order will ship, check stock, advise on stock replenishment dates, provide product assembly instructions and directly contact our CS Team (via email).  This is still pretty new for us but it has been met with a wonderful reception.  Checking stock is definitely the most popular feature in this climate of supply chain challenges.  You can even add the item right to your shopping cart once you’ve looked up an item.

Olivia is helping to improve both the customer experience (CX) and the employee experience (EX) – this is a win-win-win for all stakeholders. Where are you applying AI?

4 Keys to Being a Great Employer – Pay, Purpose, Culture, Caring
Fortune’s April 26 blog summarized the interviews of CEOs from the “Best Places to Work” list last week. In short, the key to bucking the trend and attracting/retaining talent came down to pay, purpose, culture, and caring. Notes Cisco’s CEO Chuck Robbins (they were #1 on the list): 

Employees don’t want to be employees, they don’t want to work for managers, and they don’t want to work for executives. They want to be human beings who work for other human beings. And I think authenticity and the importance of being human, understanding the things they’re dealing with as humans, and building that into how you approach them in your day-to-day work with them, is so important.”

There are four important quotes, like above, in the Fortune blog – and more insights – please take 2-minutes to read. Then sit with your team and audit your pay, purpose, culture and caring, something I’ll do with the CEOs and CXOs attending next week’s Scaling Up Summit in Dallas. We’ll work on all four!

Videoconferencing Stifles Creativity but Speeds Decision Making!
Some important research is being done to understand the effects of videoconferencing on teams. This New Atlas article details the latest showing both simple and complex creativity is stifled by videoconferencing. They are guessing because we’re actually looking MORE directly into people’s eyes!! Makes sense. In turn, videoconferencing helps set priorities and speeds decision-making (more on this in the article). Knowing what it’s best used for is extremely helpful. Founder Factor
Ann Hanna, the founder of Taureau Group, a boutique M&A firm based out of Milwaukee, is attending my CEO Boot Camp this week in Lake Tahoe (snow, snow, snow!). She’s identified what she calls the “Founder Factor.” Notes Ann, “how they (founders) become successful is by being scrappy and cheap – and how that later gets in their way of successfully scaling and exiting.” It’s an example of “what got you here, won’t get you there!” Robin Sharma, quoted above, shares something similar “Cheap costs more.” Where are you being too cheap?

Next Source of Competitive Advantage?
HBR features a critical article on datagraphs by Vijay Govindarajan (I try to read everything he writes) as the next source of competitive advantage. Notes the summary of the article:

Leaders must invest in upgrading their data architecture to enable a real-time, comprehensive view of how consumers interact with their products and services so that they can develop unique ways to solve customer problems. Datagraphs capture this information, helping to reshape competition in every sector.

He goes on to note:

Datagraphs capture how people work, play, learn, socialize, transact, travel, and do any other activity that can be associated with commerce.

This article is more for B2C, though we ALL sell to people. Please have your CMO look over it for a few minutes. If you know more than your competition about the demand side of the business (about customers), it’s a strategic advantage.

Hyatt Extends Incentive Comp
Notes Mark Hoplamazian, CEO of Hyatt, in Fortune’s recent daily blog:

We are now looking at how to extend the incentive compensation plans through the whole hotel, as opposed to just for managers and above… The people who can move the guest experience data, which we’re tracking very carefully, are the ones who are intersecting with the guests directly.

Customer (and Culture) Included in Compensation Decision
Setting compensation is more than just a private conversation between the employer and employee. There are other critical relationships that figure into compensation decisions, namely the other employees (culture) and the customer (strategy). Is your compensation plan aligned with what your customers ultimately want you to deliver (job to be done) and the culture of your firm? Hyatt seems to be seeking better alignment.

CEO Optimism Lowest Since 2016 – Time to Double Down on Scaling Up
Chief Executive magazine released their latest CEO confidence index and it plunged 9% almost in line with the 8.6% rise in inflation. And now 50% of CEOs think conditions will worsen over the next year. My take? It’s time to be ambitious!! Going Big, When Everyone is Thinking Small
Open the Kindle app on your phone, spend $.99, and take 2-minutes to read the “Introduction” – it grabs you with the first sentence – a couple guys (now close friends and client) are minutes from losing their $200 million portfolio of homes and under investigation by the FBI – then they pull it out by “going big.” You can skip to that section at the end of the Introduction to get a bolt of juice in your thinking. Then enjoy the rest of the book this weekend.

White-Knuckling It to White Boarding It
Hotelier and author Chip Conley (recently Elder Stateman at Airbnb) writes in his April 2 blog “Resilience buys you time; adaptability buys you a future.” You can hunker down and hold on (white knuckle it), or you can gather your team around a whiteboard and innovate – and think big. It’s why you want to be regenerative vs. resilient – to “play to win” vs. “play not to lose.” Which are you doing this 2^nd qtr. of 2022?

Go Big Now – Julia Pimsleur 
I’ve been remiss in promoting Julia’s book Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices to Overcome Any Obstacle and Reach Your Goals Founder and CEO of Million Dollar Women (I’m on her board), her book provides the science and mindset techniques to get in a growth mindset. It is time to Go Big Now when many are hunkering down due to inflation, war, etc.! You don’t see this stopping Elon Musk, who is “newsjacking” every moment, whether providing sat phones for Ukraine or becoming the largest shareholder of Twitter this week!

Dutch Use Gaming to Build Modern City
Is the Dutch city Almere the best designed in the world? I’m in Amsterdam this week for our Scaling Up Summit in Europe (sharing updates with our hundreds of clients in the region). This week I learned about this innovative city built partially using a game-based initiative Play the City. This BBC article provides details and beautiful pictures of possibly the most innovative and livable city in the world!
