Decoy Pricing – and Other Ikea Tricks We Can Use
The Hustle details the various psychological tricks Ikea uses to drive 60% of its revenue through impulse purchases. Besides the maze-like layout (you walk over a mile); the clever use of mirrors to give you a sense of belonging; dump bins of cheap items placed along the route giving the impression of low price; and their clever use of decoy pricing. Please take 1 minute to scan to the decoy pricing section and read an explanation and example – it’s a pricing strategy all of us can use (I used it in the pandemic!).

Lower Prices Over Time
One of several insights/surprises highlighted in the article is Ikea’s focus on continually lowering the price of their most popular items. Notes The Hustle:

• The Billy bookcase — a product so beloved that one is sold every 5 seconds — retailed for $82 in 1985. Today, it goes for $50.
• The Lack side table came with a $25 price tag in 1985. Now, it can be had for $13.

FYI, Ikea is increasing overall prices by 9% in 2022 to deal with inflation. And it sells 1 billion meatballs – some fun infographics in the article.

The Ikea Effect – Have Your Customers’ Self-Serve
Having the customer complete something increases the perceived value of the item. Cake mix sales suffered when you only had to add water; when the recipe was changed requiring you to add your own egg, sales went back up. You are now more emotionally involved/attached to the process. The same with assembling the Ikea furniture – there is a sense of pride/ownership. Customer satisfaction goes up when customers self-serve (think ATMs). How might you put this to work for you? Again, please take a few minutes to read this article. Two Questions Parents Should Ask Their Children
Adam Grant, author of Think Again, led an EO Powerhouse session this morning. Below I share two questions parents might start asking their children. But first…

David Williams learned about the Scaling Up Platform back in 2002 when Mastering the Rockefeller Habits was first published. Nudge Children to Notice Kindness
Quite a bit of evidence suggests that children who help others end up achieving more than those who don’t. Adam Grant and his wife noticed they were asking their children about accomplishments but not about kindness. So, they added 2 questions to their dinner conversation “how did you help someone today?” and equally important, “did someone help you?” This article titled “Stop Trying to Raise Successful Children” in The Atlantic will give you lots of detail, research, and nuance.

Top 5 Reasons People Leave
Fortune reported this morning on why 4 million people are moving jobs in the US each month since last July -- the latest from Pew Research Center (I tend to trust their numbers). The top 5 reasons: 

• First: It is about money. 37% of those surveyed gave “pay was too low” as a “major reason” they left, and 26% more said it was a “minor reason.”
• Second: Opportunity for advancement was cited by 33% as a major reason and 30% as a minor reason.
• Third: Respect.  Feeling “disrespected at work” was a major reason for 35% and a minor reason for 21%.
• Fourth: Childcare issues. That was a major issue for 24%, and a minor issue for 24%.
• Fifth: Not enough flexibility to choose when to put in working hours. A major issue for 24%, and a minor issue for 21%.

1/3 Left for Lower Pay!
Yesterday, at Bloomberg’s Summit, it was noted that a third of people are leaving and taking lower-paying jobs. So, it’s important to get your compensation right – perceived fairness is the key, the research is showing (and Principle 2 in Scaling Up Compensation). Then it’s getting the other things right as mentioned above, along with the culture. BTW, “opportunity for advancement” can be code for “how can I earn more.” That’s why it's important to have wide pay bands for each position, with clear metrics on how someone can earn twice as much in the same position without having to move up in the organization.
