BofA Grants $1 Billion Stock to All Employees 
This CNN piece describes how Bank of American is granting restricted stock to virtually all its employees to attract and retain talent.  They are banking on this working better than the cash bonuses they’ve been using (ave. $750 last year). The value of the restricted stock ranges from $2900 ($45 stock) to $27,000 and vests over 4 years starting in 2023. Replacing quarterly bonuses with longer term gain-sharing plans aligns with our 5 design principles in Scaling Up Compensation. Design your comp scheme to work better for you! Wikipedia for Business 2022 – Released this Week
It’s critical your Wikipedia listing is accurate and useful. Subtitled: The Rules & Latest Developments that Businesses & Communicators Need to Know to Succeed, author Josh Greene, CEO of the Mather Group, is also our Wikipedia advisor. He helped us correct many inaccuracies in our listings – including my birthdate and age! US First; China Second -- # of Gazelle Firms
With a specific definition of firms yet to be public but likely to become a “unicorn” (over $1 billion in valuation), the latest global list was released on Tuesday. US ranked first (and San Fran the top city) with 201 of the 525 globally; China ranked second (Shanghai and Beijing 2^nd and 3^rd cities) with 171. CEO Optimism is High for 2022
Fortune/Deloitte’s latest survey of Fortune 500 CEOs (175 responded) found 65% are expecting growth to be strong or very strong. Top 4 constraints: labor, pandemic, supply chain, inflation.

100x Return on Financial Incentives
This McKinsey article details 7 principles in setting up generous financial incentives to drive maximum benefit during a transformation of the business – in many cases providing a 100x return on the incentives you provide! The article goes on to note: “Compensation is a key reason why people switch jobs and providing financial incentives can help organizations retain their top employees.”

7 Principles for Outlier Performance
Keeping the design of incentives simple; tying to ambitious (not attainable) goals; and encouraging broad participation of the entire company are three of the seven. Please take 2 minutes to scan all 7 principles and then design an incentive plan for 2022 to drive outstanding results. Name That Strategy
You don’t have a strategy unless you’ve named it, something Hubert Joly emphasized in his book The Heart of Business (about the turnaround of Best Buy). Scaling Up’s 2022 strategy is called “Blue Ocean’s 22.” What is the code name for your strategy? It’s an important creative decision. No military mission would think to move forward without a name – please name yours for 2022! Then put it on shirts (like my client Mynd has done) and on everything else you print this year. Keep it top of mind.

Data Analytics – Go/No Go Decision on Selecting New Sites
Every sports team has a data analytics function – and so should you. Scaling Up Coach Rob Nankervis shared Monday how an industrial client he coaches is using targeted pieces of demographic data to inform the go/no go decisions in selecting new sites for their expanding B2B business (most think this is just a B2C exercise). They also track metrics on all elements of their Flywheel and Brand Promise. Thus, they have strong optics on where they’re going and how fast they are getting there.

5% Decrease in Price; 10% Increase in Volume?
At one of our coach-led planning sessions, the head of sales suggested that if the company lowered prices by 5% they could increase volume 10% -- revenues would go up. The Scaling Up coach put the numbers in Alan Miltz’s Cash Flow Story software (all our coaches have a global license to use – the only coaching organization which does) and it showed that such a scenario, given the company’s business model, would reduce cash by almost $750k and reduce profit by over $500k. Worst, it would hurt the company valuation by over $3 million. Nothing like a cold fact to end a debate. In turn, if prices were raised 5% and volume decreased 10% (revenue down), it would generate an additional $500k in cash and profit -- and increase valuation by $1.5 million! Better not to guess at things like this.

Tesla’s Flexibility Drives Results Over Rivals
This NY Times article details why Tesla is soaring and other auto manufacturers aren’t. In short, “…the company simply had a superior command of technology and its own supply chain.” It controlled its own destiny by writing its own software. This lets it quickly update the software to accommodate chips that were more readily available. In turn, Mercedes and others, using thousands of different specialty chips, were crippled when a few of those chips became unavailable. Jeff Immelt’s Advice to Leaders
The 38-minute mark in Ron Lovett’s Culture podcast interview is where former GE CEO Jeff Immelt suggests you need to stop thinking out loud as a leader.   Notes Ron, “When Jeff mentioned it, at first I didn’t react well to this idea.  Then I had my Aha moment.   As entrepreneurs/leaders we are so used to thinking out loud, we need to be mindful of who we are doing it in front of.  People hang off our every word.   When we are speaking out loud with our crazy ideas, this can frighten people or worse, turn into a distracting to-do list.”  Amen!

Ron continues, “Now, depending on who I’m with, before I start to think out loud, I will start the discussion with ‘I’m about to think out loud so be prepared to just listen, provide feedback but do not act on anything I say :).’  This has already proven to be helpful.” Sage advice Ron!
