Corporate Travel Budgets – Opportunity for Mid-Market Firms
Are your client’s large companies? At last week’s CEO Boot Camp I picked up a lucrative idea. Most leaders inside large firms worry most about losing their budget for next year – and with corporate travel down to almost zero (impacting Airbnb and others), they are sitting on piles of money they need to spend on something else or risk losing. A couple of the boot camp CEOs said they were able to tap into these funds inside their large corporate clients. Opportunity for you? Ask your sales people to pursue.

Airbnb Lost 80% of Their Business – and Filed to go Public Last Week
…and only founders have the capability to decide, after losing a billion dollars in revenue, to set up a $250 million fund to support their customers! This amazing triad at the top of Airbnb – Brian Chesky, Nathan Blecharczyk, and Joe Gebbia – have navigated their firm through this crisis using a stakeholder model of business (vs. the old shareholder approach), raising $2 billion to shore up the firm while painfully having to lay off 1900 employees (25%) which Chesky explained in this letter to employees (a great model of communication) a few months ago.

This week I participated in a Conscious Capitalism webinar on DEI – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – which was quite good. Late to the party, you might have already seen this image, but it visually shows the difference between equality, equity, and inclusion. And this excellent short article elaborates on the image and why a focus on inclusion and equity are more important than equality.

And possibly Gary Hamel and Michele Zanini’s groundbreaking book Humanocracy: Creating Organizations as Amazing as the People Inside Them will prove to be the most important book written this decade, published at just the right time (Aug 18)! In short, people don’t need to be managed! All this top-down traditional organization chart stuff just crushes innovation, productivity, and lives! We’ve been trying to fix “management” for decades. Maybe better to just get rid of it, like Haier did or dozens of other companies highlighted in this manifesto-of-a-book.

Who is Gary Hamel? –
Outside the walls of Harvard Biz School there isn’t another professor/thinker who has done more and created more language around strategy than Gary Hamel, co-author of one of the most downloaded articles in HBR history “The Core Competence of the Corporation” and many more (he’s actually the most published author of HBR articles in history). I open the strategy section of Scaling Up quoting Hamel’s definition of strategy. He identified the need for a “council” before Jim Collins. And now he’s tearing down bureaucracies, which he finds start around 200 employees (that’s many of us!!). It’s his software running inside Apple; he guided Chinese appliance manufacturer Haier in stripping out all 10,000 managers and organizing the rest of the 56,000+ employees into 4000 microenterprises with just two levels separating frontline from CEO.

Hamel and Zanini open with a set of very human questions in the Preface – then they go on to provide a practical summary of the book. This is why I’ve asked Gary to share his thoughts with us mere mortal firms Sept 17 (Virtual Summit 2.0), along with Richard Branson, Adam Grant (quoted above), Sarah Friar, myself, and others – 90-minutes of the best ideas, inspiration, and insights I could assemble to launch us into the final four months of 2020 – I cashed many of the chips I’ve been accumulating for decades to make this happen. Register your entire team (not just senior leaders!) then let them learn and soar and make your life/jobs/company easier/better.

Mistake Last Week – Only 10% of Global GDP –
This Forbes article makes a case for why a company’s revenue is not the same thing as a country’s GDP, thus my calculations last week that the Fortune Global 500 generates 40% of world GDP were wrong. I should have used the $2.1 trillion in profit (not revenue) amount and added in wages of roughly $7 trillion (guesstimate) for an approximate $9 trillion contribution to GDP, or roughly 10%. Still not bad employing just 1% of the population. Thanks to Conscious Capitalism guru Raj Sisodia for alerting me of my miscalculation and pointing me in the right direction.

Stakeholder Capitalism Anniversary –
One year ago, yesterday, the Business Roundtable (BRT) announced a new purpose for corporations which embraced what has become known as stakeholder capitalism vs shareholder capitalism. BRT, an influential association of almost 200 CEO’s of America’s top corporations, added the needs of employees, customers, suppliers, communities, and the environment to the list of stakeholders – a very “conscious capitalism” approach. This Fortune article marks this anniversary of a change in business focus that has only accelerated during this COVID mess.

How Satori Capital Assesses Teams in Five Minutes –

Sunny Vanderbeck, Managing Partner at Dallas-based Satori Capital, uses a Red, Yellow, Green approach to assessing a team in five minutes. This ScaleUps.com article details how he thinks about each team member and why it’s important to get three colored markers and your physical org chart (you can draw it out on a piece of paper) to do the exercise. I would add, does each team member “wow” you. Pls take 2 minutes to read and five minutes to do the exercise so you can deliver on Sunny’s quote above.

Avoid This Strategic Mistake in a Recession –

This HBR article details one of the biggest mistake’s companies make in a recession – changing strategies to be the cost leader if you weren’t the cost leader before. Notes the authors:

We found that when differentiators moved toward a cost leadership strategy such efforts did not help them. In fact, we found that changing strategy did not increase firm chances of surviving the recession, nor did it improve the firm’s revenues or its finances.

Concludes the authors, “The advantages that made your product or service worth more than what the cost leaders offer still apply. You just need to make that case to your customers.”  Please take 3 minutes to read this insightful article.

Global 500 Stats to Benchmark –

The Fortune Global 500 list is out and you can find it here. With combined revenues of $33.3 trillion, which is almost 40% of the global economy, the Global 500 generated $2.1 trillion in profit for a 6.3% average. And employing 69.9 million people, less than 1% of the global population, they averaged $476,394 revenue/employee and $30k profit/employee. How does that compare to your firm? Better yet, find a few firms on the list in “similar” businesses and compare stats. Then clean up your processes and drive on an even better stat – gross margin dollars/employee!!! 

18 Generated More Than $250k Profit/Employee –

Why not set a goal to have your profit/employee equal what is now your revenue/employee! These 18 firms averaged over $250,000 profit per employee. Surprising for me? Facebook outpaced Apple!! And one India-based firm Rajesh Exports (gold jewelry retailer), with just 409 employees, is both a Global 500 firm and averaged $416k profit/employee, greater than Facebook and Apple! There is hope for all of us!!!

China 124, USA 121–

Walmart tops the list ($523 billion revenue) followed by three Chinese companies. And once again China hosts more Global 500 firms than the USA, though several are state owned enterprises. There are several very interesting infographics that provide you a great visual feel for the Global 500 – worth absorbing.

This practical McKinsey report describes 9 ways companies can dramatically speed up decisions and actions (learn, decide, act – the Scaling Up mantra). You’ll recognize many of the ideas inherent in Rockefeller Habits 2.0. Nevertheless, it’s an excellent and well-written reminder – with a useful chart detailing the 9 ways. Use it as a checklist at your next executive team meeting (I plan to next Monday) – and then “make fewer, more important decisions” as the report highlights. More Generalists to Gain Speed? –

Just yesterday I was discussing with a CEO how his team became too specialized to where a dozen people were required to do one thing (involves filing medical claims) – and it’s crushing him. Instead, the move is cross training someone so they can handle the entire process from start to finish. What often takes 10-seconds will expand to six hours as one person waits for another “in the que” to get to that 10-second task! As an example (back to the McKinsey report)…

Learn How to Learn –

…the 8^th way to gain speed McKinsey labeled “Learn how to learn.” Excerpting:

Consider the US Navy’s newest “littoral combat ship.” These vessels can complete myriad tasks, such as hunting submarines or sweeping mines while operating in the shallows. One might think they therefore have a large crew of highly trained specialists. Not so. In fact, these ships are run by just 40 “hybrid sailors,” who have proved capable of mastering a wide variety of skills, from handling ropes to firefighting to monitoring remote sensors. They need to be skilled, of course—mishandling a rope can cause serious injury—but their chief skill is the ability to adapt and learn quickly. They learn continuously and are open to new experiences and flexible in their thinking. And that, COVID-19 has demonstrated, is what business needs, too.

Forbes published “The World’s Most Valuable Sports Teams” list a week ago. Still at #1 is the Dallas Cowboys valued at $5.5 billion and purchased by Jerry Jones for $150 million in 1989 (my beloved Barcelona soccer team came in 8^th at $4.02 billion). Sports teams have been one of the best investments this Century. And what’s striking is that the tenure of ownership for NFL teams averages 39 years, almost twice that of the NBA, NHL, and MLB. More interesting stats throughout the article.
